'Managing the environmental footprint of socio-economic
development'
The Institute of Social Ecology (ISE) was established in 1999 to
provide structural support for community based education /development
programmes. The Institute is a consultancy service that
promotes and/or provides appropriate, community based, socio-economic
activity in the alleviation of poverty, with special reference to
environmentally sound development, environmental management and the
promotion of ecotourism. The organisation has a section known as GROW
(Generating Resources for Our World) which produces resource materials
of particular relevance to the transformational needs of people in the
deep rural areas.

Through its work the ISE is of assistance to all centres of learning;
community workers, non-profit organisations and businesses working with
communities. It favours in particular working with:
Community educators (colleges, universities and other facilities)
and school teachers, with special reference to programme design and
management relevant to Curriculum 2005
In-service teacher education - Geography teaching : Grades 11 and 12
State employees; community leaders and managers of non-government
organisations; church leaders : interested in issues of sustainable
development
Community people, especially those involved with leadership at any
level.
Post-school students (eg students who have left school before
matriculating), who are working in, or who are seeking to work in, the
field of community management and/or development.
Undergraduate as well as post-graduate/ post-certificate
students studying in the fields of development and/or environmental
management.
what we offer
In engaging with priority teaching issues, ISE pays particular
attention to:
The origination, design and/or management of accredited certificate
study courses for teachers at all grade levels, as well as for
community leaders.
The production and distribution of, appropriate resource
materials for learning programmes.
Co-operative work with appropriate state agencies such as the
Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, the Education Department and
the Department of Health.
Co-operative work with appropriate non-profit organisations (NPO’s) in
designing and/or presenting study programmes.
Effective evaluation techniques that will help to improve its
programmes
The ISE will provide back up and support services in all programmes in
which it is working in fields of community development.

The ISE gives priority attention to learning programmes that develop the capacity of :
Educational practitioners : for participation in community based development and environmental education. (School and adult education.)
Community leaders : for participation in the development and management of socio-economic programmes, with specific regard to issues of environmental management and long term sustainability.

OUR VISION is to work effectively in promoting community
involvement in sustainable development rooted in sound environmental
management practices.
OUR MISSION is to promote community based activities that are
both economically sound and environmentally sustainable.
OUR AIM is to contribute to sustainable development in the
Lowveld of Mpumalanga and Northern Province by providing and/or managing
appropriate training and education programmes at all levels of
participation within regional human resource development programmes..
FIELD OF FOCUS : Community leaders, especially in deep rural areas. Teachers and learners in all grades of education, with special
emphasis on programmes for Curriculum 2005 and on in-service support for matric Geography teachers.
COURSE VENUES : Courses are conducted at suitable venues in the
Lowveld, for example the Lowveld Centre for Life Long Learning, in White
River, Mpumalanga. Where logistically viable the ISE is prepared to run
courses at other venues chosen by the participants.
