to the Web Portal of Dr Lynn Hurry, an environmental management
consultant based in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Dr Hurry's experiences over the past 30 years include the writing and
publishing of environmental materials; the development of community
programmes of sustainable living; and managerial experience that has
included the directorships of two provincial education
departments. (Director of Education with the KaNgwane Government and
Director of Environmental Education with the Mpumalanga Provincial
government.)
In addition to his work as a consultant Dr Hurry is the founder of
Eco-logical Africa an environmental education tour operation : 'Making
sense of environmental management issues in the heart of the South
African Lowveld.' Working with Ian Milne of Nelspruit, Dr Hurry has
developed study-programmes for students & teachers from all parts of
southern Africa, particularly those training to teach in the natural
science fields.
Dr Hurry is also Director of Aardvark Publications, a small southern
African publishing company that specialises in activity books for young
people. He is a founder member of the Environmental Education
Association of Southern Africa (EEASA) and has been Honorary Secretary
and President of this Association.
experience
From 1989 to 1991 Lynn worked as a Consulting Director : Educational
Projects with the Education Department of the (then) KaNgwane
Government. More recently, he served as the founding Director of
Environmental Education with the Mpumalanga (Provincial) Department of
Environmental Affairs.
From 1976 to today he has also worked as an independent author and
publisher. He has written and published extensively in the field of
environmental/ ecological information, gardening, geographical and
environmental education as well as in the field of teacher education
(Over 50 books, and numerous journal and other papers). In addition to
working with other publishers, he owns and manages Aardvark
Publications, a company specialising in environmental books for young
readers.
During this latter period he also worked as an educational consultant
and examiner in Geography for two national examination authorities.
ecobizz developments
The term “Ecobizz” has been developed and copyrighted to describe
activities which promote the sustainable use of the ecological
environment and its resources.
In response to the success of the Thuthuka-Thembalethu-Uplands Project
in Mpumalanga, Lynn is initiating new projects in the KwaZulu-Natal
area.
Lynn has completed an Research and Development project for the uMngeni
Municipality of Howick relating to the development of eco-businesses in
the Midlands are. (Thuthuka Ecobizz : Research & Development Project. A
Report to the uMngeni Municipality February 2008)
Working with the Zulu Mpophomeni Tourism Experience (ZMTE), a Midlands
initiative that is developing an ecotourism programme around the
Mpophomeni Wetland. (Recently January 2009) ran a workshop for the
Mpophomeni teachers on the use of curriculum activities to promote
better understandings of the regional importance of the wetlands, both
for conservation as well as for eco-tourism developments.. (Mpophomeni
Educators’ Workshop : Thursday 29th January 2009 Venue : Mpophomeni
Community Centre : Theme : Environmental Education and Eco-Tourism – The
case for the Mpophomeni Wetlands.)
Working with other agencies in support of Ecobizz developments, and is
in discussion with The Business Support Centre of Pietermaritzburg and
the First Step Farming and Eco-Business Centre of Lions River (KZN) to
establish Ecobizz centres at Edendale and Lions River respectively. 
Enquiries from development agencies interested in establishing
Ecobizz activities will be welcomed.

programme of support support for eco-business development in the
Nkomazi District of Mpumalanga. 2003 – 2006. A natural-resource based
project Initiated by myself and funded by the Swiss SA
